Thanks all, statically assigning MAC addresses and keeping a record in the spreadsheet is probably a good place to start off, then SCVMM is probably the way I would be forced to go when my environment get's large enough to justify it.The truth is, you can’t really change the MAC address of a device(it can be Windows 10 desktop or laptop computer, other OS computers and network devices) because it is assigned/written on the device physically while manufacturing. Tim, I have marked one of your replies as an answer since you indicated the same as another poster and you have spent your time with responding here and seemed to understand what I was getting at. Other users have at least offered SCVMM as a solution, and Tim has voted against my powershell idea with a plausible you have not however provided any links toĪny resource which has indicated this can be done, not even mentioning SCVMM which I know can do this job because I've read articles about it.

in the virtual world a MAC can change from host to host - my question was about keeping this MAC address to a particular VM as it flies with the fairies from one server to another.

My original question was regarding something which in the physical world is completely unique because of being hard coded, as far as i'm aware it can't be duplicated or changed (certainly not by turning a machine off and on I'm really not an expert in networking as much as you evidently are, however from the very quick scan of Wikipedia that I made about IPX/SPX, it seems these are IP protocols, nothing to do Ok vegan, you seem to be making less sense as time goes on here. would love proof this feature actually exists. of course I don't believe a word of it, but as an idea it is rather clever.

Sounds interesting, I've never used cisco before but in a large hyper-v deployment this could be very useful for those who don't use SCVMM unless of course the agent's config files on EVERY hyper-v host in the cluster kept track of which imagine if the VM has been off for a while, in a dense environment surely this would reuse a MAC for another VM. Same MAC to the same VM when it restarts. secondly how would the cisco unit know that it is reassigning the I have no idea how hyper-v would ensure it gets MAC addresses from a cisco device, surely there must be some kind of agent installed on the hyper-v host which co-ordinates this. Same MAC address without having to statically assign it - this could scale up to very large deployments.

Im interested in this as well actually, pulling MAC addresses from a centralised separate unit would mean the hyper-v hosts aren't part of the equation anymore for MAC addresses, the VM could literally move anywhere in the network it will always have the MAC's maybe im the only one I don't know) but SCVMM is too expensive or lacking skillset to use etc. What did you think about my powershell idea? do you think that could work? im trying to think of a world where SCVMM hasn't been invented, what could we do? there are a lot of small shops that want to make that ease of management step (possibly with the ( I am only assuming this behaviour doesn't change with server 2012 R2., if it always retains that original MAC and that's communicated through a cluster then my original question is null and void). this still doesn't change the fact that the MAC address range varies from host to host and the MAC assigned to a vm can change when moved from host to host Had to apply for a MAC range themselves).Īssuming the guy meant to add the word "else" at the end, what is the reference to "server pool". Microsoft is effectively pretending to be a NIC manufacturer with hyper-v (they

I think by "network deal with mac pools" surely is referring to a MAC pool created by Hyper-V, network adapters have their own MAC addresses pre-coded by the manufacturers.
